Some years ago the Alberta Winter Games were taking place in Strathcona County and I volunteered my photography to the event organizers. I was assigned the biathlon event which was both exciting and challenging. I was delighted to cover the event as I was something of a marksman in my youth, and felt a nostalgic kinship with these athletes.
The potential for very cold temperatures weighed heavily however, knowing that sensitive digital cameras fail the lower the mercury drops.
On the night before the event, a weather miracle occurred. A warm front moved into the region and with it, some ten centimeters of fresh snow. Not only would condition be perfect for the athletes, but the mild weather would allow me to cover the event without fear of damaging my cameras.
It was a terrific experience volunteering, knowing that I would be providing athletes and families with cherished memories of the games.
