A graduate of Assinaboine Community College’s Media Production Program, I am a Manitoba transplant living and working in Alberta since 2003. Getting my foothold in television broadcasting in Red Deer, I worked at RDTV as a Videographer/Video Editor before accepting a position at Global News in Edmonton in 2006. My role as Videographer at Edmonton’s most watched newscast truly exposed me to everything life in Edmonton’s Capital Region can offer. All the while I have been honing my photography skills shooting weddings and other creative projects when requested. In early 2018, after 15 years in television broadcasting, I decided to leave Global News to start my own video and photography production company: Black Birch Media. Now I am able to offer companies, organizations and individuals the imaging expertise and creative vision earned from years of professional broadcasting.
About Brad Gowan
I am always searching for new ways to involve myself in the creative process. Through sketch art, performing music and even cooking and baking, I love getting my hands on something and creating. Getting my first camera as a kid, I must have driven my parents crazy! Asking them to develop rolls of film, capturing a unique perspective of my world. As I got older I began to learn just how powerful photography and then video could be. Having the ability to make the ordinary extraordinary and tell not only my story but the story of those around me became incredibly rewarding. Something that stood out to me as I followed my passion was a comment from friends and loved ones. “I hate having my picture taken. Don’t put me on camera!” It took me a while to understand their fear. Then I understood: the image of the photograph or how they appear in a video doesn’t represent who they feel they are in their mind’s eye. “I don’t look like that. That’s not me.” That’s when I decided to go to school and learn the craft, the art of photography. So that I could show my clients how amazing they are through photography and video that shows them as they see themselves: strong, confident and beautiful.
Away from the camera I share my life with my wife of 10 years Ann Marie and our new puppy Flynn. A practicing guitar player of over 25 years, I’ve even played as part of the opening act to Canadian Rock Icon’s Trooper. I love to experience new food but have a particular weakness to bakery goods, which has led me to try my hand at baking all kinds of cakes and pies and sweets! I even baked the cake for my own wedding! An automotive enthusiast, I’ve got the need for speed! I spent a day at the Las Vegas International Speedway a few years back checking off a major bucket-list item: to drive a Lamborghini. And I love to travel, camera in hand, exploring places I’ve never been and revisiting favorite locations. But my favorite place of all is our home here in Edmonton.
